Who was Golda Meir, anyhow?

Born in Kiev, Golda Meir fled Russia as a child for Milwaukee in 1906 to escape brutal pogroms against Jews. She became a teacher before moving with her husband to a kibbutz in Palestine in 1921. A passionate Zionist, she later rose to notable positions in the Israeli government, culminating in her appointment as Prime Minister in 1969, making history as the first female PM of Israel.

At 70 years old, she was a grandmother in poor health who wore orthopedic shoes, hardly the typical image of a leader in danger zones. However, Golda's strong personality conquered all, and she led Israel with determination and resilience during her five-year tenure, including responding to the tragic massacre of Israeli athletes during the Munich Olympics in 1972. She met heads of state like US Presidents Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, and UK Prime Minister Harold Wilson, as well as Queen Elizabeth herself.

After resigning in 1974, Golda published her memoirs, My Life, in 1975, and she passed away in 1978 at 80 years old due to lymphoma.
