Gold-winning performance by Sverdlovsk Sambas at the World Games held in China
Russian Sambo Champion Sofia Istomina Wins Gold at The World Games 2025
Sofia Istomina, a Master of Sports of Russia in sambo, has made history by winning the gold medal in the women's under 65 kg category at The World Games 2025 held in Chengdu, China.
The World Games, an international multi-sport event, is held every four years and this year, it includes sambo competitions for the first time. A total of 34 sports and 60 disciplines are part of the games' program, attracting around 5,000 athletes from over 100 countries.
Denis Pasler, the head of the Sverdlovsk region, announced Sofia's victory on his Telegram channel. He expressed pride in her determination and hard work, thanking her coaches, family, and team for their support.
Sofia, a graduate of the Yekaterinburg sports school for Olympic reserve, had a challenging path to the gold medal. She narrowly defeated Feruza Bobokulova of Uzbekistan in a tightly contested final, securing her top position despite an initial points tie (2:2).
This victory is particularly significant as it marks a comeback for Sofia after a recent defeat against her long-time rival Nili Block from Israel in another competition. However, at The World Games 2025, she avenged this defeat in the semifinals before clinching the gold in the final.
Sofia's achievements don't stop here. She is also the owner of the 2024 World Combat Sambo Cup. The athletes will compete for 253 medal sets at The World Games 2025, and Sofia Istomina has certainly proven herself a worthy contender.
The World Games 2025 are taking place from August 7 to 17 in Chinese Chengdu, making this the first time the games are held in China. The games have been held since 1981, and this year, they are witnessing the inclusion of sambo, a testament to the growing popularity and recognition of the sport worldwide.
