Unsuccessful hunt for golden jackal in Sylt after release for culling - Gold jackal released for hunting; shooting efforts unsuccessful on Sylt island

In the coastal community of Sylt, the nights have grown restless. Over ninety sheep and lambs have fallen victim to a golden jackal since its arrival half a year ago (as reported by stern). Known for coastal protection, these livestock losses have become a pressing concern.

This unforeseen predator has proven surprisingly evasive. Groups of hunters gather each night, hoping to catch a glimpse and bring the jackal down. Nevertheless, their efforts have yet to yield success. "Contrary to popular belief, the jackal doesn't wait till dusk, but starts around 10:15 PM - it's still effectively daylight on Sylt," Thomas Diedrichsen, the hunting coordinator, told the DPA news agency. With shifting tactics, hunters seek a lucky break and pin down the savvy predator's movements. But with the goings-on of island life, their pursuit remains a challenge.

Discouraging Hunting Tourism on Sylt

With the potential for this hunt to gain attention among hunters across the country, Manfred Uekermann, North Friesland's deputy hunting master, aims to deter hunting tourism on Sylt. "We shall not welcome the helping hand of other hunters," Uekermann shared with Norddeutscher Rundfunk.

Regularly found in Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean, the golden jackal had no natural predators on the island's 99 square kilometers. Its arrival remains mysterious, possibly making its way through the Wadden Sea via the Hindenburg dam.

Criticism of the hunting permit has arisen from conservation groups, citing potential threats to the ecosystem and island identity. However, Uekermann maintains that the current situation calls for decisive action. "If you've witnessed the gruesome attacks on the sheep and lambs, ripping their throats and tearing off their ears, then one can hardly have sympathy. And we'll be relieved to finally capture it." For humans living on Sylt, the shy jackal generally doesn't pose danger.

The Commission has also been consulted on the draft directive regarding the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation during the nightly hunts for the elusive golden jackal on Sylt.

Despite the arrival of hunting tourism on Sylt due to the golden jackal predicament, Manfred Uekermann, North Friesland's deputy hunting master, aims to discourage such tourism.
