Goalkeeper Thatcher Demko of the Vancouver Canucks appears to be in better shape, both physically and mentally, as he prepares for the upcoming season.
Vancouver Canucks' Thatcher Demko Prepared for 2025-26 Season After Challenging Recovery
Vancouver Canucks goalie Thatcher Demko is set for a fresh start in the upcoming 2025-26 season, following a challenging recovery from a rare knee injury that kept him sidelined for a significant portion of the previous campaign.
Demko, who was named a finalist for the Vezina Trophy in the 2023-24 season, will share duties in the net with Kevin Lankinen. The duo has a strong rapport, with both goalies supporting each other throughout their journey.
Despite missing out on 23 games due to health issues, Demko remained committed to the Canucks, expressing his determination to help the team rebound from their difficult 2024 season. The Canucks aim to return to the form that took them to a Game 7 in a second-round playoff series against the Edmonton Oilers in 2024.
Demko's recovery process was not just physical but also mental. He faced numerous hurdles, but the experience helped him grow as an athlete and as a person, teaching him to take more than he ever thought possible. His mental health was a priority during this time, and he worked extensively to address any issues that arose.
The absence of Demko was felt by the team, with captain Quinn Hughes stating that it was a difficult period. However, Demko's recovery also had a positive impact on his personal life, helping him become a better father and husband.
Demko welcomed a new child this summer, and he feels like himself again this season. He has gained a new appreciation for his work and is eager to contribute to the Canucks' success.
Head coach Adam Foote acknowledges the challenge of managing the goalie tandem, balancing competition with health. The duo has been spending time skating together before training camp began, preparing for the upcoming season.
Both Demko and Lankinen are in consideration for their respective Olympic teams. Demko is considering playing for the United States national team for the Olympic Games.
The Canucks signed Demko to a three-year, US$25.5-million extension on July 1, 2025, showing their faith in the goalie's potential. With Demko back in form and Lankinen's successful 2024-25 season (25-15-10, a .902 save percentage, a 2.62 GAA, and four shutouts), the Canucks are optimistic about their chances in the upcoming season.
