In Germany, email services GMX and web.de continue to reign supreme in the market, according to recent data from consulting firm Convios. While GMX clung to its lead with a steady market share of 25.7%, web.de suffered a significant dip, sliding into second place with 23.1%. Remaining consistent in third place was Gmail, the service of tech giant Google, with a market share of 15.1%.

Other notable providers include t-online (8.8%), Outlook (8.0%), and Yahoo (4.3%). Interestingly, both GMX and web.de are affiliated with United Internet, a Germany-based company.

Business communications predominantly take place over email. In fact, 73.9% of respondents in the study preferred communicating with companies via email, with 32.9% opting for telephone calls and 17.0% sticking to letters. Messenger and social networks fare lower in this regard.

Online shoppers generally aren't keen on SMS or messaging apps like WhatsApp for receiving order confirmations or shipping updates. Instead, they prefer to monitor their email inboxes for such notifications. Moreover, consumers rely heavily on email for invoices, contract information, and other related documents.

Convios, the firm responsible for conducting the study, has been diligently chronicling email provider market shares in Germany since 2009. The research involved surveying 1004 internet users aged 16 and above online in September and October.
