Chess maestro Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., a twelve-time Philippine Open champion, is gearing up to clash in the Asean Seniors Chess Championships, set to unfurl from July 1 to 11, 2025, in Penang, Malaysia.

"I can't thank Penang Chess Association President Atty. See Swee Sie, who's also the Vice President of the Malaysian Chess Federation, enough for extending the invite," Antonio enthused. "I'm aiming to rack up some ELO rating points."

He also paid his respects to Mr. Ignatius Leong for masterminding both the ASEAN Seniors Chess Championships and the ASEAN Age Group Chess Championships.

🤝 FOR CHESS FANS

The 63-year-old grandmaster recently sealed runner-up honors in the Melbourne International Open Rapid Chess Championships, which took place from April 7 to 9, 2025, at the Melbourne Chess Club. Additionally, he nabbed fourth place in the Premier Division of the 2025 O2C Doeberl Cup Standard competition, played April 17 to 21 in Canberra, Australia.

In the ASEAN Seniors tournament, Antonio will be accompanied by esteemed compatriots: IM Jose Efren Bagamasbad, IM Angelo Young, IM Rico Mascarinas, and NM Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr.

🤝 INTERNATIONAL ALLIES

International bigwigs slated to attend the tournament include GM Cao (Vietnam), IM Sadikin and IM Gunawan (Indonesia), IM Chan (Singapore), and IM Liew (Malaysia).

In the upcoming Asean Seniors Chess Championships, Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. will represent the Philippines in Manila, aiming to compete against international sports personalities such as GM Cao from Vietnam, IM Sadikin and IM Gunawan from Indonesia, IM Chan from Singapore, and IM Liew from Malaysia.
