Have a bit of a curveball for you today! The agricultural giant, Bayer, has hit a minor roadblock concerning their controversial weed killer, glyphosate. As revealed by the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL), Bayer's plant protection product Roundup Future will be restricted from being applied or sold in Germany for the moment, due to an objection raised by the German Environmental Aid (DUH), which carries a temporary suspension. Bayer will have the opportunity to argue their case in the upcoming hearings, and there's a possibility that the product may still hit the shelves. The optimistic spokesperson for Bayer expressed, "We're hopeful that we can settle this quickly and ensure farmers in Germany can access this essential product, especially as the season kicks off." Meanwhile, other glyphosate-laden products approved in Germany remain unaffected.

The German Environmental Aid, however, holds a differing view on the glyphosate affair. "It's significant that the newly approved glyphosate pesticide Roundup Future can no longer be sold and applied temporarily," shares DUH Federal Managing Director Jürgen Resch. He adds, "Any day spared from this toxic total herbicide is a win for our environment."

In stark contrast, Bayer stresses that the active ingredient is safe for humans and the ecosystem when used in accordance with guidelines. "Multiple regulatory authorities across the globe have confirmed its safety for decades," says the company representative, emphasizing the renewed approval of glyphosate granted by the EU Commission for another ten years in 2024.
