HANG YOUR HAT IN BANGKOK, AP – China shot down any whisper of tariff negotiations with the White House crew, labeling the gossip as wacky as chasing the breeze.
China's talking heads dropped this bombshell during a Friday briefing. Guo Jiakun, a foreign ministry spokeshuman, declared that China and the U.S. haven't exchanged words about tariffs, never mind making a deal.
"China's stance is clear as a bell," Guo commented. "We're up for meetings, but only if we've got mutual respect and equality." Commerce Ministry spokeshuman He Yadong echoed the sentiment: any nuggets about tariff talks are hogwash, just like trying to catch wind.
Trump hadTT told journalistic types earlier in the week that "all systems are go" when asked if China was on his call list, but his Treasury Secretary insisted there was no formal chat happening.
Trump, answering reporters' questions about China's denial of talks, drawled, "They had a powwow today." Then he added, "Ain't nobody got time for labels."
With the U.S. president thirsting for a way to dial down his hammer-hard tariffs on Chinese imports, businesses and consumers are sweating bullets over potential inflation and recession nightmare scenarios.
Trump already hit China with 145% tariffs, while China tossed back 125% tariffs on U.S. wares. While Trump suspended tariffs for other countries for three months, promising to chat 'em up, China was the odd one out. Instead, they upped their game, hiking tariffs and trying out other financial smackdowns, all while yelling, "Fight to the finish!" For example, they restricted rare earth mineral exports and piled on legal challenges at the World Trade Organization.
He made it crystal clear that chit-chat should include cancelling every tariff China currently faces.
"If the United States truly wants to fix this issue," He said, "it should lace up and face the criticism from the global community and everyone back home, toss out all those sneaky tariffs against China, and find some new ways to resolve squabbles through fair dialogue."
Though China's hurled spitballs, Trump chimed on Tuesday that he'd be "so nice" and wouldn't throw down with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
"We're gonna live together like a couple of good friends," Trump said, "and if all goes as planned, work together."
