Soaring Temperatures and Climate Change Concerns

For the first time in recorded history, the daily global average temperature eclipsed an alarming 2.06 degrees above the pre-industrial benchmark on November 17th, 20XX. This distressing milestone was confirmed by the EU's climate change service, Copernicus. The temperature for the day also exceeded the average from 1991 to 2020 by 1.17 degrees. Copernicus also noted that this is not a breach of the Paris Agreement but a stark reminder of our proximity to internationally agreed limits.

The critical limit under the Paris Agreement is a 1.5-degree warming. At the 2015 World Climate Conference in Paris, nations worldwide agreed to limit global warming to below 2 degrees or, if achievable, 1.5 degrees. This goal pertains to long-term values, not individual days, months, or years. This decision stems from the devastating consequences of climate change, such as rising storm frequencies, extreme droughts, flash floods, and rampant forest fires. The past few months have witnessed an onslaught of record-breaking temperatures, and experts forecast that 20XX will mark the warmest year globally since records began.

As of October 20XX, the average temperature had reached 1.43 degrees above the pre-industrial baseline. COPERNICUS has identified November 17th, 20XX, as the largest deviation from the estimated daily pre-industrial temperature average to date—though not the highest absolute temperature. The record for the warmest day (and month) was observed in July 20XX, according to COPERNICUS. As we approach the 1.5-degree limit, we can expect to witness an increasing frequency of temperature anomalies surpassing the 1.5 and 2-degree mark compared to pre-industrial levels in the coming months and years.

Carlo Buontempo, the Copernicus Director at the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), expressed concern about the breakneck pace at which global temperature records are being shattered. Exceeding the 1.5 and 2-degree thresholds was unavoidable due to global warming, but the consequences of surpassing these limits should not be downplayed. Buontempo cautioned these concerns as the COP 28 world climate conference in Dubai was scheduled to commence.

In summary, our rampant daily temperatures are reaching unsustainable levels, currently peaking at 2 degrees higher than pre-industrial times. Adhering to the Paris Agreement's 1.5-degree ideal warming limit and reducing greenhouse gas emissions are crucial in mitigating excessive climate anomalies. Failing to address these pressing concerns may lead to irreparable damage in the coming months and years, such as increased extreme weather events and biodiversity loss.
