Trump's Presidency Takes a Toll on US Reputation Abroad
Global reputation of the United States wanes in international sections
The Pew Research Center's latest report reveals a significant decline in the United States' popularity across numerous countries since Donald Trump took office, with Europe, Mexico, and Canada bearing the brunt of the negative shift. Interestingly, the U.S. continues to be viewed positively in Israel.
The Slide in European Opinion
In Germany, Trump's presidency has resulted in a substantial drop in the U.S.'s favorability ratings. The number of people with a positive view of the U.S. plummeted 16 percentage points, from 48% to 33%, between 2024 and 2025. Currently, a whopping 66% of Germans hold a negative opinion of the U.S., compared to just 48% last year.
The U.S.'s image has taken a nose-dive in several European countries, with Poland reporting the most significant decline. Sweden, among all the surveyed nations, holds the U.S. in the lowest regard, with 79% of Swedes displaying a negative opinion. In contrast, Mexico and Canada, which Trump aims to make the 51st U.S. state, now both have a majority of respondents with unfavorable views of the U.S., a significant change from their positive sentiments towards the U.S. under Trump's predecessor, Joe Biden.
Trump's contentious policies and character have received little support from the majority in most of the countries surveyed, particularly in neighboring Mexico, where 91% of respondents distrust Trump's foreign policy decisions.
The Arrogant Leader
On average, a majority of respondents do not agree with Trump's policies on key issues like the Ukraine war, the Gaza war, immigration, and climate change. Approximately 80% of respondents perceive Trump as arrogant, while only 28% deem him honest.
However, majorities in 18 countries view Trump as a strong leader. The most positive image of the U.S. was observed in Israel, where 83% of respondents hold a favorable view of the nation. The survey was conducted between January and April 2022 among 28,333 adults across 24 countries.
