Worldwide Opinion on Trump's Presidency: A Mixed Bag of Criticism and Approval
Global reputation of the United States is on a downward spiral in various nations.
The Pew Research Center's 2025 global attitudes survey sheds light on the diverse international views of the U.S. under President Donald Trump's administration, revealing both sharp criticisms and supportive sentiments.
Plummeting U.S. Popularity in Many Countries
The study found that the United States has experienced a significant drop in popularity in 15 out of 24 countries surveyed. In Germany, the favorability ratings for the U.S. plummeted by 16 percentage points due to Trump's presidency, with an alarming 66% of Germans now harboring a negative view of the U.S.
Sweden and Mexico: Stinging Critics
The deterioration of the U.S.'s image under Trump has been particularly striking in Europe, with Poland experiencing the steepest decline, according to the survey. Out of all the countries surveyed, Sweden had the least favorable opinion towards the U.S., with 79% of respondents expressing a negative view.
Mexico and Canada, both countries where Trump has suggested creating the 51st U.S. state, now have a majority with a negative opinion of the country—a stark contrast to the positive majority under Trump's predecessor, Joe Biden. The survey revealed that 91% of Mexican respondents lacked trust in Trump to make sound global political decisions.
Trump's Arrogance and Lack of Honesty
Across all surveyed countries, a majority of respondents disagreed with Trump's policies on critical issues such as the Ukraine conflict, the Gaza conflict, immigration, and climate change. On average, 80% of respondents described Trump as arrogant, while only 28% deemed him honest.
Israel, however, held the most positive view of the U.S., with 83% of respondents expressing a favorable opinion towards the country. The survey was conducted between January and April 2025 among 28,333 adults from 24 countries.
Dependence on Trump's Leadership
The study showed varying levels of confidence in Trump's ability to lead the world effectively. While confidence in Trump is higher in countries like Israel, Nigeria, Hungary, India, and Kenya, it is notably lower in Western Europe and several other regions.
The overall image of the United States has experienced a decline in many countries compared to previous years. Nevertheless, in some countries, such as Israel, Nigeria, and Turkey, the U.S. is now viewed more favorably.
Trump: A Love-Hate Figure
Although Trump's leadership style resonates with many, his policies and bold actions stir controversy worldwide. Yet, his image as a strong leader remains widespread, especially in Japan, Greece, Italy, and South Korea, even among those skeptical of his decisions.
The complex perception of Donald Trump's administration unveiled in the Pew Research Center's study demonstrates the deep-seated effects of U.S. foreign policy on international relations and public opinion.
Community policies and employment policies under President Trump's administration have evoked diverse opinions, as indicated in the Pew Research Center's 2025 global attitudes survey. Politics and general news regarding the U.S. under his administration have been subjects of intense international discussion, with significant chunks of the population critiquing Trump's handling of critical issues such as immigration, climate change, and global political decisions, particularly in Europe and Latin America.
