The twelfth season of the hit show "Sing meinen Song" (airing Tuesdays at 8:15 PM on Vox, also via RTL) is currently underway. On April 29th, Michael Patrick Kelly (47), a veteran of four appearances and former host, will grace the stage. Joining him will be Bosse, Mieze Katz, Madeline Juno, Finch, and ClockClock.

In an exclusive interview with spot on news, Michael Patrick Kelly discusses why the show remains such a powerful experience for him, shares heartwarming stories, and discusses prejudices that need to be overcome within the show. He also talks about his latest single, "The One," and his deep affection for his spouse.

Back Again After Five Years

Michael Patrick Kelly: It felt amazing to return after five years. As a participant, I could just enjoy myself. As host, I had to take on more responsibility and ensure the group remained cohesive. I adore this show. It's a reality show par excellence because everything we see is genuine. There's no scripting, and we musicians aren't actors playing out scenes with manufactured tears. It's genuinely moving to watch new interpretations, as each edition offers fresh, surprising, and deeply emotional experiences.

The Magic of "Sing meinen Song"

Kelly: From the start, the host being a buddy and a musician—not merely a moderator—contributes to the magic of the show. Feelings of home and camaraderie are evoked right away. In this show, seven strangers come together remarkably quickly and form friendships that last beyond the recording. As music serves as the driving force behind these connections, it's quite extraordinary. Relationships forged during the show endure beyond its finish, as I remain close with Gentleman to this day.

Baring Souls in the Limelight

Kelly: There's a certain risk involved when artists reflect each other's life stories, which often seem starkly different. For instance, I had never heard of Finch before. Known for his energetic, roaring stage presence and party-oriented style, he shared a deeply personal story that he had never spoken about before. It was amazing to recognize shared experiences, regardless of our apparent differences, in the peaks and valleys of our respective music journeys. Music is inherently emotional, and in the best possible scenarios, it's deeply personal, allowing us to pour our hearts out.

Breaking Preconceived Notions

Kelly: Entertaining different characters and different music genres, our shared love for music served as the common denominator, transcending preconceived notions. I found a beautiful, heartfelt song in Finch's repertoire dedicated to his daughter. This side of Finch you don't often see shatters stereotypes. We humans tend to think in boxes, and "Sing meinen Song" happens to excel at dismantling them. It creates a diversity-focused environment that respects and appreciates differences. In a sense, the show provides a glimpse into a utopian world amidst a fractured one.

A Special Ode to Johannes Oerding's "Mother's Day"

Kelly: Johannes Oerding's "Mother's Day" resonated deeply with me. The song's story goes like this: My mother passed away when I was five years old. Shortly after, it was Mother’s Day, and I wanted to bring flowers to her grave. As a child, I ran to the cemetery and picked whatever I could find along the way. When I arrived, I saw that other graves were adorned with beautiful bouquets while mine seemed rather sparse. Consequently, I took flowers from other graves to decorate mine. Years later, I returned with a pickup truck full of flowers to make amends. The residents of the village were so moved by my gesture that they cried, finally knowing who the thief from back then was. Johannes transformed this experience into "Mother's Day" and granted me a profound moment.

Emotional Touchstones

Kelly: Five years ago, we organized a large donation campaign for a township in South Africa. I recently returned to witness the progress firsthand. It was delightful to see that our aid proved sustainable and continues to bear fruit five years later. Mieze was happy to accompany me, and we played football with 50 children. It was a lovely interaction outside of the recordings, witnessing their smiles.

New Music and "The One"

Kelly: Though no song was created during the recording sessions this time, I did perform my new single, "The One," live for the first time. It was exhilarating to debut my new music to such a talented group of artists, who warmly welcomed the song. Finch even expressed a desire to make "The One" his new alarm clock (laughs).

The Inspiration Behind "The One"

Kelly: "The One" is an ode to a love that endures hardship. In a relationship, no one is perfect, but staying together even during the tough times and striving to be the best partner you can be—that's powerful. It's in steadfastness and perseverance that we grow, much like athletes. It may sound romantic to spend your entire life with one person, similar to penguins and swans. But I've been with my wife for close to 15 years, and I cherish that experience immensely. It was time to celebrate that union with a song.

The Key to Lasting Happiness

Kelly: I believe open communication and making the relationship a priority are essential. Accepting that your partner can be different and acknowledging that each person's life path is unique and significant is integral. I don't possess a secret formula, but honesty and dedication to each other can work wonders. It's the little, everyday choices that often make the most significant impact. Indeed, life's mysteries, especially in human relationships, remain a bit unpredictable. That's what makes our journey so fascinatingly complex.
