The Alaska summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin has shed light on the deep-rooted disagreements surrounding the territorial disputes in Ukraine. Despite the meeting, no ceasefire agreement has been reached, and negotiations continue under tense conditions.

President Trump has stated his goal of negotiating an end to the war, a goal he claimed he could achieve from the first day of his term. He has suggested that any ceasefire would likely include "some land swapping," particularly involving Russian claims on approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory, including the contested eastern Donbas region. However, Ukraine’s constitution forbids ceding territory, complicating negotiations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, along with European leaders such as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, emphasize the need for security guarantees for Ukraine and insist that Ukraine alone must decide its territorial integrity. They reject any changes to international borders by force. Zelenskyy called for a full ceasefire with the current line of fighting serving as the negotiation baseline and received support from a coalition of nations pledging postwar support through a "reassurance force."

Putin reportedly agreed to allow the U.S. and Europe to offer an "Article 5-like" security guarantee for Ukraine—a reference to NATO’s mutual defense clause—though Trump had resisted extending such guarantees. This suggests some openness to international security arrangements short of full NATO membership.

The Wednesday meeting, chaired by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, urged that the Ukraine must be at the negotiating table as soon as follow-up meetings take place. Merz declared that important decisions could be made in Alaska, but emphasized the need to protect the fundamental security interests of Europe and Ukraine.

European leaders, including Carney, fear the Alaska summit could result in an agreement asking Ukraine to cede territories currently controlled by Russia. They have expressed concern over Trump's suggestions about territorial exchanges, with Carney stating that "credible security guarantees are needed to allow Ukraine to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity."

Trump has expressed a desire to meet with both the Ukrainian and Russian leaders soon after the Friday summit. He has also suggested convening a trilateral meeting with Putin and Zelensky after the summit. However, it is worth noting that Zelensky was not invited to the Friday summit.

Fighting continues actively on the ground, with Ukrainian forces resisting Russian advances in various regions. The international community remains aligned with Ukraine on rejecting territorial changes imposed by force, while negotiations continue under tense conditions.
