Global displacement figures surpass 122 million individuals.

The global count of people fleeing war, persecution, and other atrocities has surpassed the staggering figure of 122 million, as confirmed by the United Nations (UN). By April 2025, this number surged by more than two million from the previous year, according to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) based in Geneva.[1] The escalating conflicts in Sudan, Myanmar, and Ukraine have played a significant role in the escalation of displacement.[2]

Even though nearly two million Syrians returned to their homeland following the downfall of the long-reigning leader, Bashar al-Assad, the overall number of displaced individuals has risen. Concurrently, funding allocated for refugee aid has sank to levels comparable to 2015, which marked a time when half as many people were displaced worldwide.[2]

Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, commented, "The current era is marked by unrelenting volatility in international relations." Modern warfare breeds a precarious, oppressive landscape that fuels acute human suffering, which aggravates when brutal funding slashes intensify.[2] Ultimately, the UNHCR, heavily reliant on the United States as its primary donor, has indicated that funding cuts could pose life-threatening risks for millions of refugees, particularly women and children.[1]

While the UNHCR remains tight-lipped about specific countries responsible for aid reductions, it is known that the United States, under President Donald Trump, has significantly cut foreign aid. Meanwhile, countries such as Great Britain and those in Europe are shifting funds from aid to defense budgets.[3]

The number of people displaced worldwide, due to war and conflicts, has reached 122 million as of current time. This figure is expected to continue rising, given the reduced funding for refugee aid and the ongoing conflicts in various countries such as Sudan, Myanmar, and Ukraine.

The volatile nature of global politics, particularly the reductions in foreign aid by donors like the United States, poses life-threatening risks for millions of refugees, with women and children being the most vulnerable.
