Breakthrough US-Brokered Peace Deal Between Armenia and Azerbaijan Sparks Diplomatic Tensions

A historic peace deal has been reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan, marking an end to almost four decades of conflict over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The agreement was signed in August 2025, under the mediation of then-US President Donald Trump, and includes a strategic transit corridor known as the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP).

The TRIPP corridor aims to connect Azerbaijan with its exclave Nakhchivan through Armenian territory, reducing the influence of Iran, Russia, and China in the South Caucasus. However, Iran has announced plans to block the planned corridor along its border, citing security concerns. This decision reflects Tehran's opposition to increased US and Western presence in the region.

The peace agreement is based on mutual recognition of each other's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and inviolability of borders, in line with the 1991 Alma-Ata Declaration. The deal has been hailed as beneficial for achieving lasting peace by the EU and the UN, with the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs sharing a link to the official statement on social media.

Russia, Georgia's opposition, and Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze have all expressed support for the deal, describing it as the beginning of a new era of stability and economic development. Azerbaijan had reclaimed full control of Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2023, following a successful military campaign.

Despite the widespread support, Iran's foreign ministry has cited concerns over potential foreign intervention as the reason for blocking the corridor. As of now, there is no indication that prominent international institutions such as the UN, EU, or regional organizations have issued official responses or interventions to the peace deal or Iran's blockade of the corridor.

The signing of the agreement marks an important step towards full-fledged normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The new peace deal, which aims to end decades of conflict, has received overwhelmingly positive reactions from Armenia and Azerbaijan's neighboring countries and international institutions. However, the diplomatic tensions surrounding the TRIPP corridor may pose challenges in the future.

  1. The US-brokered peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan, including the strategic TRIPP corridor, falls under the category of 'policy-and-legislation' as it involves the settlement of a longstanding conflict and the creation of a new diplomatic route.
  2. The ongoing diplomatic tensions, specifically concerning Iran's objection to the TRIPP corridor, highlight the political ramifications and potential challenges of the recent US-brokered peace agreement, which is classified as 'general-news'.
