Trump and Putin Remain Opposed to Ukraine Ceasefire, According to Latest Meetings

In a series of recent meetings, both US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have indicated their opposition to a ceasefire in the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

During a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, Trump expressed his commitment to ensuring Ukraine's security in the event of a peace agreement with Russia. Interestingly, Trump hinted that a ceasefire is not a necessary precondition for a peace agreement with Russia.

The atmosphere between Trump and Zelensky in the Oval Office was friendlier than at an earlier meeting six months ago. The meeting, which took place on Monday, lasted just over an hour and was held to discuss the next steps in Ukraine.

Trump also stated that he will call Russian President Putin after his conversation with Zelensky. However, their talks in Alaska on Friday ended without any agreement on Ukraine's ceasefire, indicating both leaders remain without a compromise on halting the conflict.

Trump's meeting with Putin sparked concerns in Europe that the US might make too many concessions to Russia to end the war. The meeting between Trump and Zelensky aligns Trump's position with Putin's position on the necessity of a ceasefire for a peace agreement.

Trump considers a meeting of the three heads of state (Trump, Zelensky, and Putin) possible. After the meeting with Zelensky, Trump and Zelensky met with European political leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, to discuss the ongoing situation in Ukraine.

It's worth noting that Trump believes Putin wants to end the war, but concerns remain about the potential concessions that may be made to achieve peace. As of August 2025, it appears that both presidents remain noncommittal or opposed to a ceasefire agreement, based on their latest public talks and interactions.

  1. The European Union, being cognizant of the ongoing political standoff between Trump and Putin regarding the Ukraine ceasefire, is closely monitoring the general news and following the developments, while remaining committed to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, which underscores global efforts to combat climate change and reduce war-and-conflicts.
  2. As the political dynamics of Ukraine continue to be influenced by the opposing viewpoints of Presidents Trump and Putin, European Union leaders, such as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, engage in discussions with both parties to express the EU's stance on the necessity of a comprehensive and lasting peace agreement that includes a ceasefire, in accordance with the broader global objectives of lessening war-and-conflicts and fostering long-term stability.
