Global Collaboration: UNDP and the Republic of Korea Introduce Worldwide Early Recovery Program for Communities Affected by Disasters
News Article: Global Initiative REVIVE Aims to Bridge the Gap Between Emergency Relief and Sustainable Recovery
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of the Republic of Korea have unveiled a new global initiative called REVIVE. This program is designed to address the critical gap between emergency relief and sustainable recovery for communities affected by conflicts, disasters, or displacement.
REVIVE, which stands for Relief, Employment, and Vital Infrastructure for the Vulnerable in Emergencies, will focus on three key areas: restoring damaged infrastructure, creating emergency jobs, and revitalizing small businesses to restart local economies, and reestablishing essential services like electricity, clean water, healthcare, and waste management.
The initiative aims to reach around 5.8 million people, including 2.5 million directly, within a one-year period. REVIVE will support early recovery efforts in countries such as Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gaza, Syria, and Ukraine, where approximately 310 million people are projected to require humanitarian assistance in 2025, many trapped in crises lasting over a decade.
In Ukraine, for example, REVIVE will repair power grids, schools, and hospitals damaged by war. In Gaza, the initiative will clear rubble, restore services, and support displaced families.
REVIVE is designed to act fast, scale quickly, and adapt to real needs on the ground. It combines catalytic financing, nationally led planning, and local solutions to ensure that recovery efforts begin immediately, rather than after emergency relief phases, enabling sustainable peace and development from day one of a crisis.
The initiative is backed by US$64 million from Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. REVIVE also includes a digital component, with published content allowing users to reach those who matter to them with news, events, jobs, and thought leadership.
REVIVE addresses not only the immediate needs of communities affected by conflicts, disasters, or displacement but also the long-term challenges of inequality, poverty, healthcare, and climate risk. By focusing on aid, infrastructure, jobs, natural disasters, and resilience, REVIVE is committed to bridging the gap between emergency relief and sustainable recovery from day one of a crisis.
The regions covered by REVIVE include Global, Middle East, and South Korea. This global initiative is a significant step towards ensuring that communities affected by crises have the support they need to rebuild and recover sustainably.

1) In an effort to address the long-term challenges of communities affected by crises, REVIVE, a digital component of the global initiative, will provide news, events, jobs, and thought leadership on topics like carbon footprint reduction in lifestyle and green sports, which can contribute to sustainable recovery efforts.
2) As part of its focus on bridging the gap between emergency relief and sustainable recovery, REVIVE will not only repair damaged infrastructure like schools and hospitals but also support the revitalization of small businesses, which could include carbon-neutral goods and services in the sports sector, contributing to a greener and more resilient local economy.
