A Kazakh action star and stunt master, Robert Kun, is back in his homeland after twenty years of international film industry experience. On June 4, Euronews reported on Kun's plan to bring Hollywood-level action films to Kazakhstan.
Robert Kun's career took off in Timur Bekmambetov's 2006 fantasy thriller "Day Watch," where he started as a teenage stuntman. He honed his skills at Kun Do studio under Igor Tsay, setting the stage for a career in Tinseltown.
Over the years, Kun has collaborated with heavyweights like 20th Century Fox, Universal, and Disney, working on movies such as "Wanted," "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," "Ben-Hur," and "Major Grom: The Game." Now stationed in Kazakhstan, Kun is eager to apply his experience to invigorate the local action genre.
Embracing his Kazakh roots, Kun emphasizes the Kun Do studio's multicultural vibe and Kazakh identity. "From the start, we aimed to establish our studio as a Kazakh outfit," he said. The name Kun Do epitomizes this vision—combining the Turkic sun or light (kun) with Asian philosophy's path to enlightenment (do).
Kun keeps pushing forward, "If you claim you've reached somewhere, it means you've stopped. We're still on our journey," he added. Now, with his sights set on local filmmakers, Kun is eager to share his knowledge and create Kazakhstan's first action movie for global audiences.
The blending of Eastern and Western influences can lead to an exciting cinematic fusion, offering a unique spin on action films that could potentially attract international attention. The potential benefits to Kazakhstan's film industry could include increased recognition, economic growth, and cultural exchange, with Kazakh films serving as a beacon showcasing the country's remarkable stories and perspectives.
