In the small town of Geisleden, a sense of grief and solidarity has taken hold following the tragic death of a 16-year-old girl named Liana. Liana, who had initially found refuge in Geisleden after fleeing Ukraine, lost her life on August 11, 2025, after being struck by a freight train in Lower Saxony's Friedland.

The community, deeply moved by the loss, has rallied together to support Liana's family, raising a total of 24,000 euros for her funeral. The emotional funeral service, held in the Ukrainian Orthodox tradition, was attended by around 150 relatives, classmates, and guests, as well as political representatives such as Markus Janitzki, the mayor of Geisleden, and Björn Höcke, the Thuringian AfD faction leader.

The mourners from Heiligenstadt and surrounding areas wanted to show solidarity and express their condolences to Liana's family. The incident has caused widespread shock across the country and sparked a nationwide debate.

Initially, the police assumed the incident at Friedland station to be an accident. However, further investigations led by the public prosecutor's office in Göttingen revealed that an Iraqi man, Muhammad A. (31 years old), is suspected of pushing Liana in front of the train. The suspect, who had his asylum application rejected, was committed to a psychiatric hospital following the death of Liana.

The news of Liana being allegedly pushed by the suspect has shocked people in Geisleden, sparking a political debate about handling rejected asylum seekers. The suspect's asylum application was rejected, and there was an enforceable deportation order to Lithuania, but a court rejected an application for detention pending deportation in July.

The case has not been without controversy. Friedland's mayor received death threats following an interview, accused of trivializing the incident. Yet, the community of Geisleden remains united in their support for Liana's family.

Liana's family, who reside in Geisleden, have found comfort in the outpouring of support from their community during this difficult time. The funds raised will provide some financial relief during their time of grief. As the nation continues to mourn Liana, the community of Geisleden stands as a testament to the power of unity and support during times of tragedy.
