Girls' CIF-SS Basketball Playoff Preview: League victors La Mirada and Whitney preparing for potential long playoff stints

The CIF-Southern Section divisional playoffs for girls basketball begin on Thursday, February 13, with the first round games setting the stage for an exciting postseason. Here's a look at some of the key matchups and teams to watch.

In Division 3A, Gahr High (15-10, 3-5 in the Gateway League) is in the postseason as an at-large representative. They will face Yeshiva University of Los Angeles (13-10, 6-2 in the Independence League) in the first round. Gahr lost to Downey High in the last game of the regular season and split the season series with Yeshiva University of Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, La Mirada High (20-6, 8-1 in the Suburban League) has had a strong season, losing a basket short of playing for a Division 5AA championship last season. They will be moving up to Division 4A for the basketball playoffs. Their lone league loss was to Warren High by four points.

Another potential quarterfinal game to watch could be between top-seeded Lawndale High and Gahr's opponent, La Mirada High. Lawndale High started the season with 11 straight wins and has a group of eight returning players plus two varsity rookies.

Cerritos High (15-11, 9-5 in the 605 League) finds itself in the same division as last season's Division 3AA championship runner-up, Oak Park High. After falling to Oak Park High in the championship game, Cerritos will open the postseason against the third-ranked team, Lancaster High (21-5, 11-3 in the Golden League). Cerritos had a roller coaster of a season due to injuries, illness, and missing players, but senior Ambar Multani leads the team in scoring, with junior Cameron Lacorte complementing her in the scoring department.

Whitney (20-8, 9-1 in the 605 League) has had a challenging schedule, going to the Central Valley and to the Pacific Northwest for a pair of three-game tournaments. Senior Haylie Wang is the leader of the Whitney team, with senior Rachel Moyher and sophomore Allysa So as her fellow starters.

The winner of the first round game between Lancaster High and Cerritos High will play either California High or Beaumont High in the second round. The projected starters for Lancaster High are Lacorte, Macaraeg, Multani, Nguyen, and Scammahorn.
