In a tragic turn of events, a four-year-old girl lost her life following an incident at Waterworld in Stoke-on-Trent on Monday.

Staffordshire Police were called to the scene after the girl was found in critical condition in the wave pool. Waterworld staff and bystanders immediately began performing CPR, but despite their best efforts, the girl passed away a short while later.

The girl's mother, who was at the waterpark with her family, described the wave pool as the strongest she had ever felt. She also mentioned that several slides and structures at the waterpark blocked her sight lines, causing her to lose sight of her five-year-old several times.

The typhoon lagoon wave pool at Waterworld reaches heights of 1.4 metres at the deep end, where only strong swimmers are allowed due to safety concerns. The venue was reportedly crowded on the day, and some attendees thought there were not enough lifeguards.

Stoke-on-Trent city council is working with the police and the privately run venue to undertake a full health and safety investigation. The council's environmental health team is also involved in the investigation.

Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent, Steve Watkins, expressed his condolences for the tragedy. He said, "Our thoughts are with the family at this incredibly difficult time. I want to assure everyone that we are doing everything we can to understand what has happened and to ensure the safety of all visitors to Waterworld."

Another woman who witnessed the incident had to leave the area as her own child did not want to see the little girl on the floor.

It's important to note that non-swimmers are instructed to remain in shallow water at Waterworld. The venue has safety measures in place, with the wave pool's wave-generating technology creating significant wave energy and fixed firmly to generate the continuous waves.

However, no prominent incident records related to strong waves or safety problems at this wave pool are publicly documented. The resort explicitly restricts access to the deep end to strong swimmers only, indicating safety measures are in place to mitigate risks associated with the powerful waves.

The investigation is ongoing, and it's hoped that it will provide answers and reassurances to the public regarding the safety measures at Waterworld. The city council and the police have asked for patience and understanding as they work to establish the facts surrounding this tragic incident.
