The film industry is gearing up for an exciting event as the 2025 Film Independent Forum approaches. This two-day event, scheduled for September 26-27 at the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles, promises candid, topical conversations focusing on current trends in the industry.

The forum will feature a diverse lineup of speakers, including the esteemed filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood, who will serve as the Centerpiece Keynote speaker. Lena Waithe will moderate a conversation with Prince-Bythewood, delving into her illustrious career that spans across film and television, creating compelling work that resonates on a personal and universal level.

The event will also host the New Wave program, a partnership between Film Independent, SAGindie, Easterseals Disability Services, and Plot Shift Media. This program aims to provide a space for independent filmmakers and executives to meet, learn, and exchange ideas in an inclusive, festive, and communal setting.

The New Wave program consists of a two-part series: New Wave Filmmakers and New Wave Actors. The New Wave Filmmakers roundtable will explore filmmakers' experiences with the dual goals of making money while telling stories that can both entertain and inspire transformation.

New Wave Actors, moderated by SAGindie executive director Darrien Michele Gipson, will focus on how actors are pushing boundaries and fighting for more authentic and inclusive representation onscreen. The group includes Isabel Deroy-Olson, Jessy Yates, Marissa Bode, and Michael Cimino, among others.

In addition to panel discussions, the forum will offer screenings, workshops, one-on-one meetings, receptions, and networking opportunities. The event's signature one-on-one meetings with industry leaders and experts, called Industry Connect, will be held on both days.

María Raquel Bozzi, Film Independent's senior director of education and international initiatives, expressed her excitement about Prince-Bythewood's participation, stating that her work has been a source of inspiration for many aspiring filmmakers.

With its focus on independent film and its commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, the 2025 Film Independent Forum is set to be an unmissable event for anyone interested in the future of cinema.
