The image shows a group of women playing a game of basketball in a gymnasium. There are people sitting on the stairs on the left side of the image, and a wall in the background. At the top of the ceiling, there are rods and lights, and banners with text hanging from them. In the center of the court, there is a basketball hoop with a net, indicating that the game is taking place in a competitive atmosphere. The text on the banners reads "WKU Women's Basketball" and the date of the game, January 19, 2019, is also visible.

Gilas Pilipinas 3x3 eyes historic podium at FIBA Asia Cup 2025

The Philippines will compete in the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup from April 1 to 5 in Singapore. A team of PBA players and rising talents has been assembled to chase the country's first-ever podium finish in the tournament.

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has reaffirmed its support for all national basketball teams, with a long-term focus on qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Gilas Pilipinas 3x3 Men will be led by Jerrick Ahanmisi of Terrafirma, Chris Koon of Magnolia Chicken Timplados, and Ralph Cu of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel. Joining them is Sean Alter, a 6'9 big man from the University of the Philippines. The coaching staff has also named a wider training pool, featuring Joseph Eriobu, Javi Gomez de Liano, Dom Fajardo, and Robbie Herndon.

To reach the main draw, the team must first overcome Thailand and the Maldives in the qualifying stage. The Philippines' best performance in the competition came in 2022, when they finished fourth after a narrow 20-18 loss to China in the bronze medal match.

At least 22 nations have competed in the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup since its inception. Australia has dominated the tournament, winning multiple titles in both men's and women's divisions. In 2024, New Zealand claimed gold in the women's event, while Mongolia secured bronze.

The squad will be guided by trainers Kirk Collier, Patrick Fran, and JJ Espanola as they prepare for the challenge ahead. The Philippines enters the tournament with a clear target: a historic podium finish. If successful, they will surpass their previous best of fourth place from 2022.

The SBP's renewed backing underscores the broader ambition of strengthening national basketball ahead of the 2028 Olympics.
