The San Francisco Giants took a significant step towards securing a spot in the National League (NL) wild card race, defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-1 on Thursday night.

Starting for the Giants was Logan Webb (14-10, 3.34 ERA), who faced the Los Angeles Dodgers in his next outing. Webb put in a solid performance against the Diamondbacks, setting the stage for the Giants' comeback.

Justin Verlander, the veteran pitcher acquired by the Giants earlier this season, was impressive on the mound, throwing seven scoreless innings. Verlander has allowed just three runs over his last five starts, showcasing his continued effectiveness.

Meanwhile, Brandon Pfaadt, the Diamondbacks' starter, kept the Giants at bay until the 6th inning, not allowing a hit until then. Pfaadt struck out seven and walked one in his outing.

The game remained scoreless until the 9th inning, when Arizona's Alek Thomas hit a comebacker. This allowed Ryan Walker to load the bases, but Walker managed to close the inning without conceding any runs.

The decisive moment of the game came in the 11th inning. Bryce Elkridge and Jerar Encarnacion led off with walks for the Giants, and Patrick Bailey followed with a single to load the bases. Christian Koss then stepped up to the plate and delivered a clutch two-run double, scoring the winning runs for the Giants.

Arizona's Corbin Carroll, who leads the majors in triples, extended his lead with one in the 9th inning. Carroll, who has 30 homers this season, needs just one stolen base to become the first Diamondback in the 30-30 club.

With the win, the Giants moved within 2 1/2 games of the final NL wild card. The Diamondbacks, on the other hand, fell two games behind the wild card spot, and will look to bounce back when they host Philadelphia for a three-game series starting on Friday.
