Devin Singletary Transitions to Veteran Backup Role for Giants

Devin Singletary, the veteran running back for the New York Giants, is expected to serve as a reliable backup in the 2022 NFL season, following the emergence of rookie Tyrone Tracy as the team's lead running back during the 2024 campaign.

Singletary, who was initially signed to replace Saquon Barkley, had a diminished on-field role last season. He averaged 3.9 yards per carry over 113 rush attempts, with a total of 437 rushing yards and four touchdowns. His performance was affected by early season fumbling issues and a groin injury, which led to Tracy taking over the starting role.

Despite these setbacks, Singletary remains a valuable presence in the Giants' backfield. His three-year, $16.5 million contract, signed last offseason, and his experience with the offensive system, gained from three seasons under Brian Daboll's playbook with the Bills, have ensured his roster spot.

Head coach Brian Daboll has praised Singletary's performance and work ethic during training camp, highlighting his solid pass protection skills as crucial for a backup running back position.

The arrival of Cam Skattebo, a 2025 fourth-round draft pick, has added competition to the Giants' backfield. However, Singletary's veteran status currently gives him an edge on the depth chart. Skattebo, who has missed three of the past four practices due to injury, is primarily used as a pass-catcher when involved.

Singletary views the addition of Skattebo as a way to help the team last and make it the best it can be. He has also expressed his desire to contribute more than just a voice in the backfield, focusing on returning to his previous form and making a significant impact on the Giants' offense.

Singletary's leadership and knowledge of the offense, combined with the all-purpose nature of the three backs in the Giants' backfield, create a dynamic mix that Singletary describes as one of the best he has been a part of.

In sum, for the 2022 and subsequent seasons, Devin Singletary has transitioned from a potential lead back to a key veteran backup who supports the younger players and provides reliable depth in the Giants' backfield.
