Wilmer Flores' Triple Home Run Blast: A Giants Thrashing of the A's

Giants outfielder Flores powers up with three home runs, driving eight runs, while Webb shines on the mound as San Francisco dominates Oakland 9-1.

San Francisco went wild on Friday night as Wilmer Flores slugged three homers, including a grand slam, and drove in eight runs to help the Giants trounce the visiting Athletics 13-5.

Flores, who broke his own single-game career highs for homers and RBIs, launched his seventh slam in the third inning off Athletics starter JP Sears. Two more long balls followed - a three-run shot in the sixth against Michel Otañez and a solo bomb in the eighth against Anthony Maldonado.

Logan Webb, who is heading to his first All-Star Game in 2024, was a powerhouse on the mound, maintaining a shutout through seven innings. He allowed one run and five hits in eight innings, striking out four and walking two. The Giants' ace has given up just two runs across his last four home starts, covering 28 1/3 innings for a staggering 0.64 ERA.

Camilo Doval sealed the win in the Giants' season-opening game against their Bay Area rivals, striking out the side to finish off the game.

Sears, who had surrendered only one run in 14 2/3 innings in his previous two starts, got tagged for four runs and six hits in just four innings.

The A's last visited the Bay Area since they left Oakland, relocating temporarily to Sacramento while a new stadium in Las Vegas is built.

The A's threatened in the eighth with two runners on and one out, but Webb stepped up to record a clutch 1-4-3 double play. The visitors managed to place runners on third base on two occasions in the first three innings, but failed to score.

Saturday's matchup features A's starting pitcher Luis Severino, making his 10th start of the season, going up against Giants pitcher Landen Roupp.

Side Note:

  • Flores' home runs were hit at exit velocities of 103.9, 108.6, and 95.7 mph, respectively, with an average launch angle of 18.3 degrees and a total distance of 1,053 feet.
  • This was the Giants' first victory in the revived Bay Bridge Series against the A's.
