Giants and Diamondbacks game sees Pfaadt and Verlander swapping numerous zeroes, carrying playoff significance
In a tense mid-September encounter, the San Francisco Giants secured a 5-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, strengthening their position in the National League wild card race.
Brandon Pfaadt, a 26-year-old right-hander for Arizona, delivered an impressive performance, pitching nine scoreless innings and allowing only one hit. Pfaadt struck out seven and walked one in his outing, throwing 97 pitches. Remarkably, he didn't allow a hit until the 6th inning, when rookie Drew Gilbert had a one-out single.
On the other side, three-time Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander, now 42, pitched seven scoreless innings for the Giants. Verlander, who has been in impressive form, needed 10 more pitches than Pfaadt. In his outing, he allowed three hits and walked two.
The game went into extra innings, with all runs scored in the 11th inning. Christian Koss' double made the score 3-0 in favour of the Giants. John Curtiss (3-2) allowed the runs for the Diamondbacks.
Justin Verlander's impressive performance extended an impressive stretch, as he has given up only three runs over 31 innings in his last five games, with a 0.87 ERA.
Torey Lovullo, Arizona's manager, praised Pfaadt's performance despite the team not scoring. Meanwhile, Carson Whisenhunt, the current pitcher for the Giants, has also been in top form, allowing only three runs in his last five games.
The Giants (76-76) and the Diamondbacks (77-76) are both chasing the final National League wild card, with the Giants 2 1/2 games behind the Mets and the Diamondbacks just two games behind New York.
Joel Peguero (3-0) worked a scoreless 10th inning for the Giants, while the Diamondbacks managed only one hit in the game. The Giants, on the other hand, had 2 hits in the game.
The Giants will look to build on this victory as they continue their quest for a wild card spot, while the Diamondbacks will aim to bounce back in their next game.
