Giant Pumpkin Regatta: Bahns Sets Personal Record, Kristensen Breaks World Record

The West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta, an annual event held in Tualatin, Oregon, drew enthusiasts with their massive, specially-grown pumpkins. Competitors, including Brad Bahns and Gary Kristensen, showcased their creations and costumes, with Bahns setting a personal record and Kristensen breaking a world record.

Brad Bahns, a dedicated participant, described his pumpkin-growing journey as an 'addiction'. He set a personal best at the 2022 regatta with a 1,376-pound pumpkin. Meanwhile, Gary Kristensen channeled his inner Buddy from 'Elf', dressing up for the race. Kristensen made headlines by setting a Guinness World Record for the longest journey by pumpkin boat in 2022.

The event, held since 2004, sees competitors carve out their pumpkins' insides to lighten and speed them up. They then race around a small lake in these floating vessels, with Kristensen winning the first race in 2022 with a 936-pound pumpkin. The Pacific Giant Vegetable Growers, a specialized organization, cultivates these giant pumpkins. While specific members remain private, the group comprises various growers along the West Coast of the USA.

The West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta, a unique blend of competition and community, continues to attract enthusiasts with its giant pumpkins and creative costumes. With records set and personal bests achieved, the event promises more excitement in the years to come.
