For yonks, Loewe has been synonymous with top-notch television sets. Yet, the industry giant has hit a snag in recent times. To steer clear of the doldrums, the company's brass is cooking up a storm. Enter world-class football sensation, Kylian Mbappé, a Real Madrid heartthrob, who's teaming up with Loewe for a game-changing partnership.

Loewe aspires to branch out from the script, abandoning the sole focus on TV and audio devices. The traditional company aims to diversify its product portfolio, entering the espresso scene, for instance, with a coffee capsule machine. According to CEO Aslan Khabliev, "Everyone drinks coffee, and there's a whole lot of stories behind it – it's an emotional thing." This year, Loewe will launch a fully automatic coffee machine, chock-full of advanced features reminiscent of those in professional coffee shops and cafes.

The capsule machine market in Germany took a 3.5% leap last year, with approximately 250,000 machines sold from January to October, reflecting a staggering 6% revenue growth, totaling 74 million euros. According to the industry association gfu, the surge is due to the country's thriving coffee culture and escalating demand for delish coffee solutions.

Loewe has long catered to a niche market with exclusive, high-quality TV devices, says Khabliev, but serving a niche carries risks. "If you stick to a niche, there's always a chance that your business model becomes obsolete," Khabliev warned, alluding to Loewe's struggles in the past. The company, founded in 1923, faced bankruptcy twice, in 2013 and 2019, before Khabliev took the reins at the end of 2019.

The tele-tainment market in Germany witnessed a slight dip in the first three quarters of 2024 compared to the previous year, as reported by gfu. Smaller screen sizes fell out of favor, while larger models continued to sell like hotcakes. Studies show that consumers prioritize the tech-specs over the price when making a purchase, and many TV manufacturers foresee the upcoming smart-home revolution turning TV devices into brainy hubs, influencing the market significantly.

Times have changed, and TV sets no longer take center stage in homes as they did 20 years ago. Khabliev noted, "TV time has dwindled to just a few hours a week, maybe for a family movie night." Yet, the demand for TV sets remains unwavering. Every household and hotel room still craves a TV set.

Surviving the Storm

The pandemic, escalating wars, and economic upheaval have exacted a toll on Loewe's finances. "It's not just us; other manufacturers also suffered," Khabliev pointed out, adding that Loewe's revenue is yet to reach the highs of the past: in 2024, the company reported nearly 60 million euros in revenue, a far cry from the 100 to 130 million euros they earned before their financial struggles. Kylian Mbappé, a Real Madrid superstar, boasts an important role as a brand ambassador for Loewe, endeavoring to bring the luxury label to international prominence.
