The 2022 White Marlin Open, the world's largest billfish tournament, is currently underway in Ocean City, Maryland. Despite rough offshore weather that extended the competition to seven days, some remarkable catches have emerged.
The top prize of the tournament, valued at approximately $4.2 million, was awarded for a 72-pound white marlin caught by Dan Gough on the boat Billfisher. This catch currently leads the tournament standings, alongside the massive 929.5-pound blue marlin caught by Drew Osmeyer on Barbara B.
The blue marlin catch by Drew Osmeyer, from Timonium, took place around 2:54 p.m. on Monday. This impressive catch is estimated to win a prize of over $1.2 million.
John Grace and Keeley Megarity are also on the tournament's leaderboard. John Grace caught a Tuna weighing 52.50 pounds, with a prize estimate of $544,757.50. Keeley Megarity also caught a fish on Monday, a 52.50-pound Tuna, although the prize estimate for this catch is not yet available.
Tommy Farella on Mama C and Danny Bardzik on No Limit also made significant contributions to the tournament with their Tuna catches weighing 95.0 and 92.5 pounds respectively, valued at $786,955 and $162,411 respectively.
The White Marlin Open, now in its second day of competition, has awarded over $113 million in prize money since its inception in 1974. Despite the challenges posed by the weather, these prize-winning catches have secured top positions and large prize estimates.
