Sailing Ghost Ship Seeks Refuge in Museum

Norderney's enigmatic ghost ship meets an amicable end at the North Sea Automobile & Toy Museum.

The quaint DIY sailing vessel will soon find a new home - in the North Sea Automobile & Toy Museum. According to Chell Michels from Norderneyer Wetter TV, the ship should be transported to the mainland by low-loader and ferry within the next two to three weeks. Afterward, it will continue its journey to the museum on a temporary loan basis.

The Wibo remains moored at the marina on Norderney, with the stranded skipper

The future of the "Wibo" - the true name of the ghost ship - remains uncertain as repairs have yet to fully address its damages. The ship's rudder, in particular, remains defective, so repairs will continue on the mainland.

In early November, the 75-year-old skipper from Freiburg found himself stranded with his enigmatic vessel in the middle of the West Beach's bathing area on the East Frisian island of Norderney, measuring 500 meters long. Before long, the tourist attraction drew hundreds of visitors curious to see the boat the skipper had built himself over several decades.

Despite initially refusing assistance, the skipper eventually reached out to the mayor due to a broken engine and a faulty engine. Chell Michels organized a fundraising campaign for the skipper, and the generosity of Norderney's residents left an overwhelming impact.

The funds were used for the ship's removal from the beach, initial repairs, and transportation to the new anchorage in Norden.

The North Sea Automobile & Toy Museum is one of the largest privately-owned museums in northern Germany, featuring vintage vehicles, youngtimers, and toys dating back to the 20th century. The addition of the East Frisian Island's ghost ship, now on loan, will surely captivate visitors.

And soon, the spectacle of the sailing vessel that made headlines nationwide will grace the North Sea Automobile & Toy Museum's halls. The best part? The skipper's labor of love will be preserved. Could the Wibo set sail again someday? The skipper himself remains hopeful quite yet.
