Ghana’s top drinkers revealed: Radio hosts, police, and politicians lead the list

A recent report from the Beverage Consumers and Bar Owners Association of Ghana has ranked the country’s top drinkers by profession. Radio drive-time hosts lead the list, followed by police officers and drivers. Politicians also feature prominently, securing the fourth position in alcohol consumption frequency.

The Association, formerly known as the Ghana Drunkards Association, released its findings ahead of the Christmas 2025 season. It urged members to stick to FDA-approved drinks during celebrations. Safety was a key focus, with calls for reflectors and helmets to protect those drinking at night.

To reduce risks, the group also asked police to escort heavily intoxicated individuals to the nearest station. This measure aims to prevent accidents and ensure their well-being. Additionally, the Association promoted ‘safe drinking’ to minimise hangovers and alcohol-related incidents. The data highlighted police officers as the second-highest consumers, often pairing drinking with lotto staking. Drivers ranked third, while politicians took fourth place. The report did not disclose the Association’s current leadership or ownership details.

The findings shed light on drinking habits across key professions in Ghana. With Christmas approaching, the Association’s safety recommendations target both personal health and public order. Authorities have yet to respond to the requests for protective gear or police support for intoxicated individuals.
