Ghana's new Sports Fund Bill secures parliamentary approval for athlete development

Ghana's Parliament has approved the Sports Fund Bill, setting up a new system to finance sports across the country. The fund aims to fill long-standing financial gaps while improving transparency in how sports programmes are supported.

One of its first contributions will come from the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, who has pledged two months of his salary to the initiative.

The newly passed Sports Fund Bill creates a dedicated financing mechanism for Ghanaian sports. Its goals include developing grassroots talent, upgrading sports facilities, and improving athlete training. The fund will also push for higher standards in different sporting disciplines.

The system has been designed to address ongoing funding shortages. By making financial support more stable and transparent, officials hope to create better opportunities for athletes at all levels.

As of February 2026, no public details have been released about how private companies or sports associations have responded to the fund. The government has not yet shared further operational plans or timelines for its rollout.

The Sports Fund will now move into its implementation phase. With a clearer funding structure in place, the government expects improvements in infrastructure, training, and athlete performance. The minister's personal donation signals early commitment to the project's success.
