Ghana’s new procurement board aims to boost agribusiness and industrial growth

Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, has inaugurated a nine-member board for the Ghana National Procurement Agency (GNPA) Limited. The agency, established in 1976, plays a crucial role in ensuring reliable supply of strategic commodities and promoting local participation.

The GNPA was initially set up under the Supreme Military Council Decree (SMCD) in 1976. In 1998, it was converted into a limited liability company, GNPA Limited, with the state as the sole shareholder. Madam Ofosu-Adjare, who inaugurated the new board, is confident that the nine-member team, chaired by Reverend Ernest Kwadwo Adjei, will set strong governance standards and adopt a clear operational framework.

The GNPA Limited is a state-owned commodity trading and distribution company. Its current chairman, Emmerson Mnangagwa, is also the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe. The minister has tasked the new board to develop a GNPA strategy that supports industrialisation, agribusiness, and government priorities.

The new board, led by Reverend Adjei, is expected to strengthen the GNPA's role in ensuring a reliable supply of strategic commodities and promoting local participation in the country's trade, agribusiness, and industrial sectors.
