Ghana cracks down on unregistered lottery agents with new 2026 rules
Ghana's lottery industry is set for tighter regulation as the National Lottery Authority (NLA) and the Concerned Lotto Agents Association of Ghana (CLAAG) launch a mandatory registration drive. Starting April 1 The registration process opens on April 1, 2026, for anyone working under NLA-licensed Private Lotto Operators. Agents and writers can complete their details through the official online portal, www.nlaclaag.com. Once approved, each operator will receive an official sticker to display at their kiosk or container.
The NLA has warned that failure to register will bar agents from selling any lotto or lottery products. Those caught operating without registration after the deadline could face fines of up to GHS 5,000, two years in prison, or both, under the National Lotto Act, 2022 (Act 1064). Enforcement will be handled by the Gaming Commission of Ghana. To ensure compliance, the NLA will deploy a dedicated team to verify registrations. Their role includes checking that only authorised personnel remain active in the market. The authority has also urged early registration to prevent disruptions and maintain smooth operations across the industry.
The move aims to create a more transparent and well-regulated lottery sector in Ghana. Registered operators will display official stickers, making it easier for customers to identify legitimate sellers. Unregistered agents, however, will no longer be permitted to trade from the start of April 2026.
