Gerry Mayhew's record-chasing return fuels Iowa Wild's playoff ambitions
Gerry Mayhew has once again become a key player for the Iowa Wild after rejoining the team in October 2022. The 33-year-old forward first made his mark between 2016 and 2021, leaving as one of the franchise's top performers. Now, he is on the verge of rewriting the team's record books.
Mayhew originally joined the Iowa Wild in 2016 and quickly established himself as a standout player. His peak came in the 2019-20 season, where he scored a team-record 39 goals in just 49 games. Ten of those were game-winners, helping drive the Wild toward a potential playoff push before the season was halted by COVID-19.
That same year, he earned two major AHL honours: the Les Cunningham Award as league MVP and the Willie Marshall Award as the top goal scorer. His dominance made him one of the most decorated players in franchise history before he departed in 2021.
After spending time away from the organisation, Mayhew returned in October 2022 as a free agent. The Wild needed an experienced scorer, and he fit the role perfectly. By early January, he was closing in on the team's all-time records for games played, goals, and points.
Away from the ice, Mayhew is settled in Iowa with his family. He has spoken about enjoying both his time on the rink and at home, with plans to expand his family soon.
Mayhew's return has given the Wild a proven leader and a reliable offensive threat. If he maintains his current form, he will soon hold multiple franchise records. His presence continues to shape the team's performance this season.
