The Federal Transport Minister, Patrick Schnieder, has announced a significant increase in the commuter allowance, aiming to address the challenges faced in regions where public local transport is not a viable option. The announcement comes as part of an agreement reached between Schnieder and the Ministry of Finance, securing 1.5 billion euros annually until 2030.

Schnieder, a member of the CDU party, highlighted his personal experience from a region where public local transport is not a viable option as one of the reasons for the increase. He did not, however, specify the amount by which the allowance has been increased or mention any specific regions where the increase will be most beneficial.

The Transport Minister also revealed that the Germany Ticket, a popular travel option, will be secured for the next five years. From 2026, the price of the Germany Ticket will increase to 63 euros. The price of the Deutschlandticket from 2027 onwards will be determined by a cost index reflecting personnel and energy costs, which will automatically adjust the ticket price to avoid yearly political debates. This index is planned to be tested for three years and then reviewed.

The mechanism for further price development will be based on a clear cost index, with the Transport Ministers' Conference determining the mechanism from 2027 onwards. Schnieder thanked the Federal Minister of Finance for their cooperation in reaching the agreement, acknowledging that it was not easy, even in the current budget situation.

The increase in the commuter allowance and the securing of the Germany Ticket for five years are significant steps towards improving public transport in Germany. The next meeting of the Transport Ministers' Conference is scheduled for the end of October, where further discussions on public transport development are expected.
