Christmas Star Remains Top Plant in Indoor Plants - Germany’s Poinsettia Boom Fades as Production Plummets in Lower Saxony

Poinsettias remain Germany's favorite potted plant, but their production has dropped sharply in recent years. New figures for 2025 show a steep decline in Lower Saxony, where growers once dominated the market. The state's share of national output has now fallen to less than a fifth of the total.

In 2025, 45 nurseries in Lower Saxony produced around 3.3 million poinsettias. This marks a near 50% drop from earlier years, reflecting a broader decline in the region's ornamental plant sector. While the Weser-Ems area stays the industry's core, overall grower numbers have also fallen—from past figures to just 306 nurseries in 2025.

The drop in poinsettia production signals a changing market for Germany's ornamental plant industry. Lower Saxony's role has diminished, with fewer growers and a smaller share of national output. While demand for the plant stays strong, the sector faces ongoing adjustments.
