Germany's paper industry is embracing sustainability. Recycled paper now accounts for 84% of raw materials used, a significant increase from 79% in 2020. This shift is part of a broader trend towards circular economy initiatives, with Berlin at the forefront.

The rise in recycled paper usage is evident across various paper types. While graphic papers lag behind packaging materials like corrugated board and newsprint in recycled content, the overall trend is positive. Germany, the world's fifth-largest paper consumer, is leading this change.

Initiatives like Pro Recycling Paper in Berlin, supported by 25 countries, are driving this growth. Although specific company names are not detailed, Berlin Recycling, a subsidiary of Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR), is actively involved in sustainable recycling efforts. The recycling rate for some paper types even exceeds 100% due to innovative production processes.

Germany's paper industry relies heavily on imports for its pulp needs. Around three-quarters of the pulp used in German paper production comes from abroad, with Brazil being the primary supplier.
