Leag builds massive battery storage facility at Boxberg site - Germany’s New Gigawatt Battery Storage to Power 640,000 Homes for Hours
A major battery storage project is taking shape in eastern Germany as LEAG expands its renewable energy plans. The company has announced a gigawatt-scale facility in Boxberg, designed to boost energy security in the region. This marks the second large-scale storage initiative by LEAG, following its earlier project in Jänschwalde.
The new facility, named 'GigaBattery Boxberg 400', will have a connection capacity of 400 megawatts and a storage capacity of 1,600 megawatt-hours. This is enough to supply around 640,000 households with electricity for four hours. The system will rely on lithium iron phosphate storage technology provided by HyperStrong, while Siemens Energy will manage the grid connection.
The Boxberg battery storage project will strengthen eastern Germany’s energy infrastructure. With a capacity to power hundreds of thousands of homes, it represents a major investment in renewable energy. The facility is expected to play a crucial role in the region’s transition away from coal.
