From the Imperial Palace to High-Tech Robots: Merz Concludes China Trip - Germany's Merz strengthens ties with China in high-stakes trade and diplomacy tour

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has concluded a high-profile visit to China, focusing on trade, technology, and diplomacy. During his trip, he met with top Chinese leaders and explored business opportunities for German firms. The visit also included cultural moments, such as a tour of Beijing's historic Forbidden City.

Merz began his trip with a guided tour of the Forbidden City, accompanied by Dominic Hosner of the German Archaeological Institute. There, he left a personal note in the guestbook, including a poem by Friedrich Schiller.

In meetings with Chinese Premier Li Qiang and President Xi Jinping, Merz stressed the importance of stronger bilateral relations. He also urged Beijing to use its influence over Moscow to help end Russia's war in Ukraine.

Economic discussions centred on fairer market access for German companies and reducing the trade deficit. While no major contracts were announced, Merz highlighted a significant Chinese order for up to 120 Airbus aircraft. He also test-drove a near-fully autonomous Mercedes-Benz S-Class at the automaker's Beijing office.

At a Siemens Energy plant in Hangzhou, Merz observed the production of high-voltage circuit breakers by a Chinese joint venture. Later, he visited Unitree, a robotics manufacturer, where humanoid robots demonstrated kung fu moves. The company also showcased robots performing household tasks like cooking and laundry collection.

The visit reinforced Germany's push for deeper economic and political ties with China. Merz's agenda covered trade, technology, and geopolitical concerns, though no immediate deals were confirmed. The trip underscored ongoing efforts to balance business interests with broader diplomatic goals.
