In a significant show of solidarity, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz participated in the 75th anniversary celebration of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, held in Frankfurt. During the event, Merz reiterated his commitment to Israel and the Jewish community in Germany.

Josef Schuster, the president of the Central Council of Jews, emphasized the importance of Germany standing firmly on the side of Israel. Schuster is the political, social, and religious representative of the German Jewish community, and his organization considers itself an 'irreplaceable partner in the history of democracy.'

Merz, in his address, underscored the essential role of Jewish life and culture in the Federal Republic. He stated that without the Jewish community, there can be no good future for Germany. He also highlighted that Germany has been one of Israel's most important supporters since the conflict in Gaza erupted.

In a clear demonstration of his support, Merz announced that he will work tirelessly for friendship with Israel. However, he also made it clear that while criticism of Israel is possible, it should not serve as a pretext for antisemitism. He firmly rejected any criticism that aims to incite hatred towards Jews or encourages the Federal Republic to distance itself from Israel.

Schuster, in response, urged Merz not to be swayed by criticism from other European countries or individual lawmakers. He commended Merz for his unwavering support for Israel.

The Merz administration has been vocal in its opposition to EU sanctions on Israel over the attacks on the Palestinian territory. This stance reflects the administration's commitment to maintaining strong ties with Israel.

Merz also called for civil courage to be shown wherever antisemitism, racism, or discrimination are witnessed. He joined the Central Council of Jews in Frankfurt on Wednesday, reinforcing the strong bond between the German government and the Jewish community.

The Central Council of Jews in Germany was founded five years after the end of World War II, serving as a testament to the resilience of the Jewish community in Germany and their continued contribution to the country's democracy. Merz's participation in the anniversary celebration underscores the importance of this relationship and the shared values of both parties.
