Dance Actions in Cities - Sign Against Violence Against Women - Germany's Dance Protests Demand Justice for Women in Global Rising Campaign
Dance protests will unfold across Germany this week as part of the One Billion Rising campaign. The events aim to highlight violence against women, a problem affecting billions worldwide. In North Rhine-Westphalia alone, around 30 towns and cities have organised rallies—including Duisburg, Detmold, and Siegburg, where the theme 'No Means No! Even During Carnival!' takes centre stage.
The campaign began in 2012, founded by American artist and feminist Eve Ensler. Its name reflects a stark reality: one in three women globally will experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. Over the years, One Billion Rising has spread to more than 200 countries, with protests in cities like New York, Mumbai, and Sydney.
Dance remains the campaign's signature tool for protest. This year, participants are encouraged to film themselves dancing to the anthem 'Women on Fire' and share the clips online. A global video collage will then unite these moments into a single, powerful statement.
While social media has transformed activism by connecting movements worldwide, organisers stress the importance of physical presence. Reclaiming public spaces through dance and solidarity remains a core part of the campaign's message.
The protests will bring together thousands in Germany and beyond. By combining online and offline action, the campaign continues to push for awareness and change. This year's events reaffirm its global reach and enduring call for an end to gender-based violence.
