German Companies to Produce Less Chocolate in 2024 - Germany’s chocolate exports hit near 1M tons despite falling production
Germany remains a major player in the global chocolate trade, exporting far more than it imports. In 2024, the country shipped nearly a million metric tons of chocolate abroad, even as domestic production saw a decline. New trade figures highlight the key markets driving this exchange, with France, Poland, and the UK leading as top destinations for German chocolate.
Last year, Germany exported 981,400 metric tons of chocolate, reinforcing its position as a leading supplier. France received the largest share, accounting for 12.3% of total exports, followed by Poland (9.9%) and the United Kingdom (9.4%). Despite this strong export performance, domestic production fell by 5.8%, dropping to 1.07 million metric tons. On a per-person basis, this equated to roughly 12.8 kilograms of chocolate produced per capita.
The latest figures show Germany’s chocolate industry thriving in exports but facing challenges at home. With production down and imports steady, the country continues to balance its role as both a major supplier and a key buyer in the European chocolate market. The data also underscores the importance of France, Belgium, and Poland in maintaining this trade dynamic.
