Fresh off his election as Germany's Chancellor, Friedrich Merz faced his first major foreign affair test when he visited the White House for a tête-à-tête with US President Donald Trump on Thursday. navigating the intricacies of diplomacy, Merz shone through with his poise and tact.
Things took a sudden detour when Trump brought up the subject of D-Day, insisting it had not been a jubilant day for Germany, while Merz had referred to it as the day when the Americans liberated Europe. Merz skilfully steered the conversation back to the primary agenda points: defense spending, tariffs, and Ukraine.
Germany, it seemed, was well-prepared for the talks, according to a press statement released prior to the meeting. The ensuing conversation was highly productive, with both leaders focusing on the aforementioned topics, avoiding specifics and maintaining a diplomatic tone.
Rachel Tausenfreund, a senior research fellow at the German Council of Foreign Relations, commended Merz's performance, stating the meeting "could not have gone better for Merz." Tausenfreund emphasized Merz's articulate responses and his strategic approach to the trade negotiations.
Another key issue discussed during the meeting was Ukraine. Trump and Merz expressed their shared sentiment of sadness over the ongoing conflict, with Trump admitting up to six thousand soldiers a week being killed. He also mentioned his recent conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where Putin allegedly agreed to retaliate following a drone strike that showed significant damage to Russia's bombers.
Trump accused Biden of causing Russia's invasion and suggested Putin seeks control over all of Ukraine. Merz proposed that the U.S. and Germany collaborate to bring an end to the war.
In terms of military matters, Merz reaffirmed Germany's commitment to NATO and their substantial investment in defense spending. Relations between the U.S. and Germany had been fraught, primarily due to the administration's accusations of Europeans freeriding on NATO and defense spending.
Trump commended Germany on their increased defense spending, although he hinted at limiting their armament efforts down the line.
Moving Forward
The meeting concluded with both leaders expressing a willingness to work together and strengthen the relationship between Germany and the U.S. Merz emphasized the importance of U.S. support and camaraderie ahead of the D-Day anniversary.
Senior research fellow at the German Marshall Fund Jackson Janes noted that Trump expressed his appreciation for the presence of American troops in Germany and Merz's acknowledgement of the historical significance of 6th June in ending World War II.
Trump claimed that the U.S. military recruitment numbers had never been lower during the Biden administration but had since risen significantly. Merz inquired about how to replicate the same surge in recruitment, to which Trump replied, "Spirit. They love our country again, and you're going to do the same thing."
Trump described Merz as a tough yet decent man and implied that he could visualize U.S. troops remaining stationed in Germany. Director of the Aspen Institute Dr Stormy-Annika Mildner highlighted the significance of an early dialogue between the leaders and the importance of addressing challenges to foster a productive partnership.
Furthermore, Dr Mildner stressed that the relationship between the U.S. and Germany remains crucial both economically and politically. Trump discussed his communication with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, dispatching a positive outlook regarding their dealings and an upcoming visit from Xi and the First Lady Melania Trump.
According to Jackson Janes, this meeting laid the foundation for a range of future discussions. Merz's deftness in the conversation earned him recognition in Washington, as well as among his domestic audience. However, Dr. Mildner acknowledges that Merz's success will require continuous effort and commitment for the upcoming years.
