German Army to Receive New Assault Rifle G95 from Heckler & Koch - Germany’s Bundeswehr adopts Heckler & Koch G95 as new standard rifle

The German military has chosen a new standard-issue assault rifle, marking a major shift in its equipment. The G95, produced by Heckler & Koch, will replace the older G36 model. Officials describe the move as a key step in modernising the armed forces. The decision follows years of criticism over the G36, which was found to lose accuracy in extreme heat. In 2015, then-Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen declared the rifle unsuitable for the Bundeswehr. Heckler & Koch later won a court case confirming it had met the original 1996 contract specifications. The G95 will gradually replace the G36 across all units. Its introduction aligns with broader upgrades in the Bundeswehr’s equipment. The first batches are now being distributed to troops in Bavaria.
