Bundesrat discusses laws for enhanced consumer protection - Germany's Bundesrat tightens product safety and eco-labelling rules in landmark session
Germany's Bundesrat has begun its first session of the year with a packed agenda. Over 60 items are up for discussion, including key consumer protection bills and economic reforms. Among the proposals are stricter product safety rules, new eco-labelling standards, and simpler contract cancellations for online shoppers.
The session, held on 30 January 2026, will focus on tightening the Produktsicherheitsgesetz (Product Safety Act). This law enforces stricter EU standards, such as Regulation 2023/988, which demands better risk assessments, technical documentation, and stronger protections against hazardous goods—especially for toys and machinery sold online.
Another major topic is the Site Development Act, designed to encourage private investment by reducing bureaucracy. The Bundesrat will also review plans to speed up procurement for the Bundeswehr, making it easier to acquire necessary equipment.
New rules for companies using 'eco-friendly' labels are also under consideration. If passed, businesses would face tougher checks before marketing products as sustainable. Additionally, a proposal aims to let consumers cancel online contracts with just one click, simplifying the process for shoppers.
The Bundesrat's decisions will shape consumer rights and business regulations in Germany. Stricter product safety laws, faster military procurement, and clearer eco-labelling could all take effect if the measures pass. The session's outcomes will be closely watched by both industry and shoppers.
