Up to 21°C on Thursday - Germany’s bizarre November heatwave brings near-summer temperatures this week
Northern Germany is set for a chilly weekend, with temperatures ranging from 6 to 9°C. However, a significant shift is expected over the next few days, bringing warmer weather and even double-digit highs in some regions.
The German Weather Service (DWD) attributes this unusually warm mid-November spell to a combination of factors. Warm air flowing in from the southwest, ahead of a low-pressure system, and a disrupted circulation pattern involving a high-pressure area over Greenland are responsible. This results in a north-south flow pattern, allowing warm air to reach Germany and push temperatures up to +20°C, unusually high for this time of year.
By Thursday, highs of up to 21°C are expected, with the warmest regions being Breisgau, Stuttgart, and along the Alpine foothills. However, cooler air masses will take over by the weekend, bringing dreary and uncomfortable weather to much of the country. The north will see cooler temperatures, with highs between 7 to 9°C and rain expected. The southwest may still see near-20°C temperatures on Friday, but highs over the weekend will range between 11 to 14°C.
This warm spell is set to come to an end by the weekend, with cooler temperatures and rain expected in much of the country. The north will remain cooler, while the southwest will still see some warmth before the weather turns dreary.
