- Germany will implement a price increase for train tickets, with the cost rising to 62 euros from January, as announced by the Minister of Saarland.
The Germany Ticket, a popular unlimited travel pass for rail, bus, and tram services, will continue to be supported by the federal government and the states. According to Transport Minister Petra Berg, the coalition of the Union and SPD remains united behind the initiative, with the goal of maintaining the ticket and keeping it attractive for users.
Starting from January 2023, the Germany Ticket will cost 62 euros. Price increases are expected after 2029, but they will be gradual and socially acceptable, as outlined in the coalition agreement. The federal government does not intend to increase its funding beyond the current pledged 1.5 billion euros annually.
However, the financing of the Germany Ticket has been a contentious issue since its introduction in May 2023. The current contribution of 1.5 billion euros from the federal government and states is insufficient for long-term financing, but the minister stated that this amount aims to provide planning security for passengers, transport companies, and transport authorities.
In the period from 2023 to 2025, the federal government and states each contributed 1.5 billion euros to compensate transport companies for revenue losses from the Germany Ticket.
The transport ministers' conference is aiming to agree on long-term financing of the Germany Ticket until 2030. However, no new information about the financing beyond 2030 was provided in the latest update.
In an interview with the Rhineland Post, Minister Berg stated that the federal government and states aim to contribute 1.5 billion euros each permanently to the Germany Ticket. The minister's statement reaffirms the commitment of the federal government and states to the Germany Ticket.
Despite the ongoing financing discussions, the Germany Ticket continues to be a popular initiative, offering unlimited travel at a moderate price. The permanent contribution aims to ensure the ticket's continuity, providing planning security for all parties involved.
