Germany Votes on Chancellor Merz Amid Political Tensions and Rise of Far-Right Parties

Germany welcomes Friedrich Merz as its imminent Chancellor in upcoming leadership role.

Get ready for a day of high political drama in Germany as conservative leader Friedrich Merz battles it out to become the next Chancellor.

On Tuesday, the 630-seat strong lower chamber of the German parliament, the Bundestag, will cast their votes for Merz to take the helm as the 10th Chancellor of the nation since World War II.

Merz aims to spearhead the most populous member of the 27-nation European Union, a role vacated by outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz's administration. This position comes with a bagful of responsibilities, including managing the ongoing war in Ukraine, dealing with the aftermath of US President Donald Trump's trade policies, and addressing domestic economic challenges.

If Merz fails to secure the necessary majority, the Bundestag will have a 14-day window to elect an alternative candidate who can attain an absolute majority. In the event of another stalemate, the constitution allows the President to either appoint the candidate with the highest number of votes or dissolve the Bundestag, triggering a new round of federal elections.

Merz must earn the support of a minimum of 316 votes in the chamber, a vote that will take place on the eve of the 80th anniversary of Germany's unconditional surrender in World War II (WWII). The secret ballots will be conducted in the renovated Reichstag, where remnants of graffiti by Soviet soldiers remain preserved in various locations.

A significant challenge for Merz would be dealing with the rise of the far-right, anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, often referred to as AfD. Mainstream political parties in Germany have refused to collaborate with AfD, citing the so-called 'firewall' against cooperation with extremist parties since the end of WWII.

Last week, the German domestic intelligence agency designated the AfD, which secured second place in February's federal elections, as a 'right-wing extremist' group, subjecting it to increased monitoring. This move was met with criticism from US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. In response, Germany's Foreign Ministry defended the decision, asserting the democratic process involved.

Merz has yet to publicly address the intelligence service's decision regarding AfD. His government, formed by the centre-right CDU along with its Bavarian counterpart, the Christian Social Union (CSU), and supported by the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD), aims to stimulate economic growth, boost defence expenditures, adopt a stricter stance on immigration, and address modernization, among other objectives. This coalition holds a modest majority, controlling 328 out of the 630 seats in the Bundestag.
